Team Wahoo’s Baja Charity Run II to Supply Canned Food, Fire Fighting Supplies, and Jaws of Life to Baja Peninsula

 ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Nov. 5, 2008 – A team of unique southern California businessmen and off-road racers have teamed to form “Team Wahoo’s Baja Charity Run II” in order to race the most famous desert marathon race in the world and donate much needed food and firefighting supplies to the to the impoverished town of San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. 

Supported by a unique partnership of businesses led by Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, Team Wahoo’s Off-Road Racing will race in the 41st Anniversary of the historic Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race from November 20th-23rd, 2008. The event, which will attract an international field of nearly 350 teams completing on a wild array of motorcycles, ATVs, trucks and open-wheel buggies, will race through massive crowds reaching nearly 300,000 on a rugged course that travels through the Pine Forest to near Mexicali, down Laguna Salada to San Felipe and back to the Pacific Coast through Santo Tomas covering much of the northern half of the majestic Baja California peninsula.  

 Driving a southern California-built, 650-horsepower Penhall-Chevy Class 1 unlimited buggy equipped with BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR tires, the team will be led by Baja veteran and Patten Company Construction owner Lee Patten; Chris Paulsen, owner of Indianapolis-based C&R Racing, and Baja 1000 race historian Marty Fiolka of Irvine-based Wide Open Adventures. Supplemental team members and co-drivers include Jim Riley of Ketel One Vodka; Nelson Stewart, father of NASCAR’s Tony Stewart and Rob Forman of 4 Wheel Parts/TransAmerican.  

 The effort is also supported by Wing Lam, Founder of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, which includes 50 Restaurants in California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Texas; Eric Morley and Jeff Bentley, Founders of Blue C Advertising in Newport Beach, California.  Sponsors include Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Monster Energy, 4Wheel Parts, BFGoodrich Tires, C&R Racing, Alpinestar, Intersect Race Group, Herzog Electric, Speed Unlimited and Blue C Advertising. 

The San Felipe charity effort is being coordinated by race veteran and noted Baja philanthropist Nick Baldwin (of Newport Beach, Calif., who founded his AOK (Acts of Kindness) organization to fund and execute personal acts of giving throughout the world. Via AOK and Team Wahoo’s sponsors, on Wednesday, November 19 two San Felipe kindergartens – Baja Mar and Jardin de Ninos, will each receive 634 cans of much needed food to match the 634 miles that will comprise each mile of this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. In addition, Bill Black will donate a much needed “Jaw’s of Life” and additional firefighting equipment via his San Diego-based organization called FIRE Etc..  To celebrate the effort, on November 15th, the Team Wahoo’s Class 1 vehicle — that can travel to speeds up to 130 miles per hour – will join other race vehicles for a special open house at the 4Wheel Parts store in Redondo Beach, located at 2500-B Marine Ave. Catered by Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, the event, which will run from 11a.m. until 2 p.m. will feature special in-store specials and a live build of a new Ford F-350 Herzog Electric/ Team Wahoo’s chase truck.

 The 2008 Team Wahoo’s Baja 1000 race project will be the subject of an extensive feature story in Orange County-based Velocity magazine, as well as other sports, lifestyle enthusiast, action sports and motorsports-based media in both print and online. There is also an effort being made to capture the racing and charitable program for a television documentary in 2009.

 This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour NBC Sports special for the fifth consecutive year, scheduled to air at 1 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Dec. 14 on the NBC Television Network. It will also air on a delayed basis outside of the U.S. on ESPN International.
